Masterclass with Anatoli Vassiliev

One of the most renowned theater directors in the world, the Russian director Anatoli Vassiliev held a conversation with the audience at Sesc Consolação. Anatoli Vassiliev became known for his stagings of Vassa Zheleznova - The First Sketch, by Maximus Gorki, and The Adult Daughter of a Young Man, by Viktor Slavkin, at the Stanislavski Theater in Moscow. In the early 1980s, he was invited by Yuri Lyubimov to work at the Taganka Theater, where he re-enacted Gorki's play and edited Serso , based on Slavkin's play, being recognized as the best production of that season. In 1987 he founded the Moscow Theater School of Dramatic Arts. The first production was Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello, and the following productions: Dumas, chapters of novels by Alexandre Dumas, Vis-a-vis , chapters of books by Dostoyevsky and Dumas, Demons, by Dostoevsky, Fiorenza and Joseph and His Brothers , by Thomas Mann, Amphitryon, by Moliére, The Lamentations of Jeremias by composer Vladmir Martynov, Don Juan, or the Stone Guest, Medea Material, based on Heiner Müller, Onegin's Journey , The Iliad: Book XXIII , among others. Vassiliev is the first Russian director (and the second foreigner, after Robert Wilson) to be invited to direct at the Comédie-Française. He also directed productions at The Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Théâtre National de Strasbourg, among others. Among its prizes, received the Stanislavski State Prize of the Soviet Federative Socialist Republic of Russia, in 1988; the Europe Theater Prize for new theater realities in 1990; the Stanislavski Prize for "contribution to the development of theater pedagogy" in 1995; The Golden Mask in 1997; the State Award of the Russian Federation in 1999; Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, by the French government, in 2007.
