Secrets of Mankind
The Japanese butoh dance company
DAIRAKUDAKAN Temputenshiki presents in Brazil for the first time the show Secrets of Mankind . The ten acts evoke elements of life, such as mystery, moral dualities and revelation in the face of death. The piece brings together 22 dancers led by Akaji Maro. Born in Nara, the actor, dancer, director and choreographer founded the group in 1972, receiving awards and asserting himself as one of the most important and influential butoh masters, besides featuring in films by Takeshi Kitano and Quentin Tarantino.

AKAJI MARO

Was born in Nara, in 1943. After acting with Budou no Kai, directed by Yasue Yamamoto, he studied with Tatsumi Hijikata, one of the pioneers of Butoh. In 1964, Maro founded Jyokyo Gekijyo with renowned Japanese actor and director Juro Kara, under the strong influence of Hijikata. In his productions, Maro was known as the actor who personified Kara's “privileged physical theory”, and who with his acting approach inspired many scenic artists during the 1960s and 1970s. When Maro founded DAIRAKUDAKAN Temputenshiki, he explored his peculiar acting technique in Butoh dance pieces. One of its basic teachings, Tempu-Tenshiki, was considered controversial not only in Japan but also in other countries, after the shocking debut at dance festivals in Europe and the United States in the 1980s. Since then, Butoh has influenced the international dance scene. Maro applies the motto Ichinin-Ippa (“a dancer, a school” - it is the idea that each individual must express / create his own repertoire of movements) in his methodology. Currently, Maro is based at the Kochuten studio in Kichijoji, Tokyo, where he supports several Butoh groups such as Sankai Juku, Ko Murobushi, among others, while presenting the performances of DAIRAKUDAKAN Temputenshiki, as well as Kochuten. He starred in independent films such as Yumeji (Yumeji) , Tsuki wa Dotchi ni Dete Iru (All Under the Moon), Kikujiro no Natsu (Kikujiro), Kill Bill. He has been a pioneer, as an actor, when participating in works such as the play La Marie-Vison (Kegawa no Marie), and Tange Sazen, a well-known TV series. As a Butoh artist, he performed at the American Dance Festival in July 2008. Maro received the Award from the Japanese Government Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner in 2006.
